Evergreen shrubs are an important element of any garden and are often the most important part of a landscape design. Rhododendrons (Rhododendron sp.), an evergreen shrub, are perfect for the shrub border and a great naturalizing shrub which blooms in the spring. Once a rhododendron is planted is established there little that need to be done to care for it. Some gardeners will deadhead the spent flower blooms to encourage a healthy bloom the following year but it not necessary.
Bayberry (myrica pensylvanica) is a hardy shrub with dark green fragrant foliage which is commonly found along the coast. It also produces fragrant waxy berries which attract wildlife and are often used in candle making. is a very hardy shrub tolerant of a wide range of environmental conditions. It grows well in poor infertile soils.
Azaleas (Rododendron sp.), like the rhododendron, are wonderful in all kinds of garden situations. They are as at home in the woodland garden as they are in the formal garden. They’re perfect for the shade gardens as there colorful spring flowers brighten up the garden. Once they finish blooming their lush foliage stays green all year. Occasional pruning may be needed to keep them at the size which is best suited to your garden.
Boxwood (Buxus sp.), an evergreen shrub, is hardy and, unless your looking for a formal look, requires only light pruning once a year. Boxwoods are generally available in mounding and upright varieties, making then well suited to the entrance garden. Once they’re established you’ll need only to water them occasionally.
Yew (Taxus sp.) is a very common evergreen shrub. Screens, windbreaks, hedges and specimens are among its many uses. Yew are very easy to grow respond well to pruning. In the shrub border its dark green foliage contrasts nicely with the lighter greens of deciduous shrubs.
Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) This evergreen conifer is the best bird attracting tree in Eastern North America. Its 25′ pyramidal form provides dense cover year round, and its shredding bark is used by many birds for nest construction. Female trees produce round, gray or bluish berry-like cones which 80 species of birds adore. Cedar waxwings earned their common name because of their reliance on the fruit.
