dry_canesOrnamental grasses are a wonderful addition to any garden. They’re generally easy to grow and offer year round interest. The following are 11 great selections.

Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) is a wonderful ornamental grass with bluish gray foliage. Its attractive plumes appear from June to July. Plant along side blue and purple flowers, such as Salvia and Veronica, for contrast and color in the flower garden. For best results, comb through the plant in winter to remove dead foliage. Be sure to water adequately during the summer months. Blue fescue prefers full sun, but will tolerate morning shade. Grows to a height of 12″ and spread of 12-24″.

Dwarf Variegated Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinaceous) is an easy to grow, beautiful upright arching grass. Showy, soft white flowers rise 6 – 12″ above the foliage. Even after the first frost has turned the foliage and flowers a warm beige, their beauty remains throughout the winter.

Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’) is a striking upright grass with dark green, shiny foliage that emerges in early spring and lasts until late fall. The flowers appear in June and at first they are feathery and pink in color, then, through the summer, they become very narrow and turn a tan color which lasts through the fall. The flower stems grow bolt upright and stand up beautifully through summer and winter. It grows best in moist, well-drained organic soil.

Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceous) is a fast growing, clump grass. It has purple foliage and purple foxtail-like flowers. This plant is only an annual in northern climates. It makes a great specimen plant or an addition to planter. Plant in fertile well drained soil in full sun after all danger of frost has passed. The foxtail like plumes will appear mid summer and last until first frost.

Red Bunny Tails Fountain Grass (Pennisetum messiacum) is a worry free, upright arching plant. It has green foliage with beautiful red foxtail blooms that become white over time. This lovely grass is a wonderful specimen as a plant or in borders. Red Bunny fountain grasses are excellent for large containers. Glossy green foliage with burgundy highlights, and cattail-like flowers.
