Trees for Large Open Spaces

tulip treeGreen Mountain Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum “Green Mountain“) is a very wnderful deciduous tree with leathery leaves. This showy tree is upright and oval in shape. It has strong limbs and gorgeous fall color. The Green Mountain is ideal for wide tree lawns and for providing shape. Sugar Maple is among the most shade tolerant of large deciduous trees. Like other maples, its shade allows it to germinate and thrive beneath a dense canopy.

American Beech (Fagus Grandifolia) is a very stately tree. This deciduous species has smooth blue-gray bark and leaves that are a beautiful dark green in the summer and turn to a golden brown fall color. The foliage on young American Beech remains in winter. The American Beech prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. The American Beech grows robust in well-drained, moist acid soil; but will not stand compaction. This beech tree is a dense shade tree whose nuts attract birds and squirrels.

White Oak (Quercus alba) is a great majestic long-lived tree that will last for generations. This deciduous shade tree has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. It prefers moist, well-drained, acid soils. The White Oak develops broad crown with age. The dense foliage is bluish-green to reddish-brown in fall. Advantages of the White Oak are that they are easily transplanted when young and they have a high resistance to ice breakage and oak wilt. It is an excellent wildlife source of food mass in the form of acorns.

American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is an adaptable and rugged tree. American Sycamore trees are large shade trees with a massive trunk and a have a wide-spreading open crown of large crooked branches. This deciduous tree has a smooth almost white bark when mature. The bark will flake off in irregular thin pieces which give American Sycamore trees an distinct mottled appearance. Sycamore trees have light green colored leaves that turn vibrant gold in the fall. The American Sycamore has moderate water requirements and exhibits a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils.

Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) also known as Tuliptree, is a beautiful specimen tree with beautiful tulip shaped flowers. The Tulip Poplar is a fast growing large shade tree that can grow 15 to 20’ over a 6 to 8 year period. This deciduous tree has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils. It has masses of tulip-like flowers in the spring. The lovely little tulip-shaped flowers are greenish-yellow with an orange band. Leaves are deep green and turn a blazing golden yellow in fall. It is a wonderful shade tree, hardy and is highly resistant to insects and diseases.
