Variegated Deciduous Shrubs

Posted by plantsman On December - 5 - 2009

Deciduous variegated shrubs are an effect way to brighten up shady areas of the garden.

Variegated Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Variegata’) has beautiful blue or pink lacecap flowers but is commonly planted in the landscape for its striking variegated foliage. Perfect in the shrub border or grouped together with other hydrangeas..

Variegated Viburnum (Viburnum lantana ‘Variegata’) has large creamy yellow and green leaves during early summer. Late in the season, however, the foliage become mostly medium green. Even though the variegation doesn’t last all summer this is still a nice shrub.

Variegated Redtwig Dogwood (Cornus alba) blooms in spring with white flowers. Works great in grouping, in the shrub border or as a specimen shrub. Its variegated foliage brightens up the garden. Plant in part shade to full sun for best growth and stem color results. Prefers well drained moist soil. Low maintenance plant that requires very little pruning.

Variegated Weigela (Weigela florida ‘Variegata’) is long flowering shrub with distinctive green foliage edged with creamy white. Its gracefully arching branches boast clusters of pink blooms which last from late spring until fall. These shrubs are very attractive to hummingbirds. Especially ideal city gardens; its compact size fits most urban landscapes.
