This is a continuation of a similar list of grasses I made a few weeks ago.
Blues Little Bluestem Grass (Schizachyrium scoparium ‘The Blues’) has attractive deep blue foliage with burgundy red fall color. It does well in a variety of soil types and is drought tolerant. Little bluestem grasses have delicate and inconspicuous inflorescence in late summer and. It remains attractive in winter. The fall color varies from tan to copper, orange, and red.
Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) can grow to 4 to 7 feet. It blooms from June through September. In late summer, purplish flower spikes form. The tall and slender stems are blue-green in the summer. The hairy blades, which can get to be 12 inches long and 1/2 inch wide, will get a red tinge on the leaves as they get older, and turn bronze in the fall. Pot it or bed it. Ideal as an accent plant or in mass plantings.
Golden Variegated Sweet Flag (Acorus gramineus Ogon) is a mounded, non-invasive rhizome grass. It is perfect for edging or as a groundcover. Fragrant, butter yellow sword-like blades create a striking contrast. Rich golden yellow foliage grows to 10 inches high, 1 foot spread. It grows well in pots, garden beds or ponds. It doesn’t like to dry out but can handle sun or shade.
Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’) is a lovely ornamental grasses. The richly golden variegated foliage forms mounds of leaves that tend to flow in the same direction, creating a waterfall effect. It has nice reddish tints that persist into winter when grown in full sun; in shaded sites it becomes lime-gold.
Maiden Grass (Miscanthus simensis ‘Morning Light’) is an attractive grass with green blades that have added highlights of creamy-white margins and mid-veins creating a shimmering silvery appearance. It has a compact growth habit which makes it ideal for containers. This plant also works well as a specimen. It displays reddish-bronze plumes in late summer which become more pronounced in fall.. Prefers full sun and is tolerant of dry conditions.
