1. Climbing roses should be pruned early in autumn, when dormant, to reduce damage during winter winds. Prune again in spring to remove any deadwood or stems which have broken over the winter.
2. Prune flowering stems by cutting on an angle approximately ¼ inch above a healthy bud. Prune the stems to about 2/3 their length.
3. Old stems, which do not flower, should by pruned back to a low healthy bud or stem.
4. Prune out deadwood, diseased stems or broken stems completely.
5. Prune out weak spindly stems and shoots so the rose put its energy into the healthy growth.
6. Redirect any stems which are crisscrossed or, if that is not possible, prune the weaker of the stems out.
7. Be sure to tie securely to trellis or other garden structure. Check older ties to be sure that the rose’s growth is not restricted. If that is the case, re-tie the stem.
