4 More Climbing Vines

Posted by plantsman On December - 18 - 2009

Here are four more vines which are perfect for covering arbors, trellises, walls or other garden structures.

Morning Glory (Ipomoea tricolor) is annual vine which blooms in a number of colors. It will twine around fences, trellises and arbors. Morning glory, as the name suggests, blooms in the morning as the flowers will close in the afternoon heat. Is easy to grow and will likely self-seed.  Can reach 10 -12′

Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) is a twinning woody vine prized for its pendulous clusters of fragrant violet-blue flowers. Ideally grown on extra strong arbors or fences. Wisteria is very forgiving of pruning mistakes as vigorous growth will hide them quickly. Chinese wisteria can also be trained as a small tree.

Pink Japanese Wisteria (Wisteria floribunda `Rosea`) produces beautiful 18-inch fragrant pink flower clusters which hang from a vigorous, climbing woody vine. Train on arbor, trellis or fence for best effect. An excellent patio cover.

Clematis (Clematis sp.) is perfect for training on trellises, fences and other garden structures. Prefers evenly moist, well drained, rich, slightly alkaline soil. Ample moisture in summer and early autumn is particularly important. The foliage and flowers prefer a sunny location, while the roots prefer to be kept cool and shaded.
