Pruning Floribunda Roses: The Basics

Posted by plantsman On December - 20 - 2009

Pruning Floribunda roses is similar to pruning tea roses or grandiflora roses. Keeping them flush with blooms every season require a bit of maintenance, particularly pruning. Here are the basics.

1. Floibunda roses most profusely on new growth so yearly pruning is beneficial. Prune in late fall or spring (spring is better in colder climates)

2. Remove any spindly shoots as they  generally do not bloom well, They’re also susceptible to disease.

3. Prune back to healthy wood or buds, diseased and broken stems. Remove any deadwood or crisscrossing stems.

4.Prune back what remains to about 10” above the ground to allow light in and air to flow through the plant. Make an angled cut approximately ¼” above an outward facing healthy bud. Yearly pruning will keep these roses full and prevent them from becoming leggy with few flowers.

5. Shorten lateral stems to 2 or 3 buds from the main stem by pruning back to an outward facing bud.

5. Throughout the summer deadhead any blooms which have gone by.
